On 11–12 May 2026, the 6th Human Rights Conference was held in Bangkok, the capital of the Kingdom of Thailand, under the auspices of the Law Association for Asia and the Pacific (LAWASIA).

The Azerbaijan Bar Association (ABA) was represented at the event by its members Aysel Maharramova, Aydan Rahimli, and Esmira Tagiyeva.

The conference focused on growing threats to human rights and freedoms worldwide, instances of repression, the legal implications of climate change, the impact of artificial intelligence technologies on legal and justice systems, and emerging challenges related to the protection of the rule of law.

The event brought together lawyers, legal professionals, human rights advocates, and representatives of international organizations from various countries to exchange views on pressing legal issues.

As part of the conference, the ABA delegation met with LAWASIA President Yap Teong Liang. During the meeting, the parties discussed the Bar Association’s activities in the field of international cooperation, the expansion of relations with foreign legal institutions, and the organization of professional events in Baku aimed at bringing together members of the international legal community.

During the meeting, the ABA delegation extended an official invitation to the President of LAWASIA to visit Azerbaijan, including the city of Baku. The invitation was warmly accepted, and the parties agreed to begin preliminary discussions on future cooperation opportunities.

The delegation also met with the leadership of the Nepal Bar Association. Discussions focused on organizing an official visit to Baku, promoting professional exchange, implementing joint training programs, and exploring opportunities for cooperation in legal projects.

In addition to the main sessions held on the first day of the conference, parallel panel discussions were organized on topics including human rights and the courts, environmental rights, indigenous peoples’ rights, the impact of artificial intelligence on the rule of law, transnational legal crises, and the role of human rights institutions.

On the second day, participants engaged in extensive discussions on the work of human rights defenders, modern slavery and the protection of human dignity, climate change and human rights, the protection of fundamental rights in the digital era, gender justice, sustainable finance, and responsible business practices.

The discussions held during the conference underscored the importance of strengthening the role of lawyers in the protection of human rights, promoting the implementation of international legal standards, improving legal aid mechanisms, and fostering professional cooperation.

During the visit, the ABA delegation also held meetings with representatives of bar associations and legal organizations from several other countries. The meetings provided an opportunity to exchange views on international legal practice, expand mutual cooperation, and explore new initiatives in the legal field.
